ASEAN

An international organization is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The ASEAN was established on August 8th, 1967, by Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines. Vietnam was becoming more communist at the time, and these five nations were also dealing with issues within their own borders. In light of this, these five nations established ASEAN to demonstrate their shared spirit of collaboration. The organization's main goal is to promote political and economic cooperation. The company's main office is in Jakarta, Indonesia.

There had previously existed a group known as the Association of Southeast Asia (ASA). It was a global organization made up of members from Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. In 1961, these three nations established ASA. It was given that name since all of its constituent nations are in Southeast Asia.

The ASEAN nations gathered in Bali for a meeting in 1976. Following this, these nations' economic cooperation intensified. However, the ASEAN's operations had slowed down by the middle of the 1980s. Thailand proposed a free trade zone in 1991. Every year, the ASEAN nations meet to discuss a variety of topics.

The ASEAN originally had just five members. On January 7, 1984, Brunei Darussalam became a member of ASEAN. The ASEAN welcomed Vietnam on July 28, 1995. On July 23, 1997, Laos and Myanmar became members of ASEAN. The country of Cambodia joined on April 30, 1999. Only East Timor is not an ASEAN member state in Southeast Asia.

East Timor and Papua New Guinea, which are observers in ASEAN but are not considered to be physically in Southeast Asia, both aspire to full membership.
